Habari 0.4 Released

The Habari team has just released version 0.4, which incorporates over 230 code changes and quite a few very nice improvements since the last release. For more details, check out the release notes and commit log.

Hopefully this is the last Developer Review release, before Habari enters official beta status.

VMware to aquire Thinstall

VMware is excited to announce the acquisition of Thinstall, a complementary virtualization solution provider.

Thats pretty interesting indeed and should complement the VMWare VDI initiative nicely. Read the whole press release, and the Whats New/Thinstall page on vmware.com. There doesn't seem to be much news regarding how VMware will look to integrate the Thinstall application into their infrastructure, but I'm sure there are more details to come.

VMware Workstation to get Unity

Us lowly Windows/Linux users have been looking rather wet-eyed at VMware Fusion (for Mac) and their Unity features. Basically Unity makes it possible to run "seamless" virtualized applications alongside your native applications.

Now, Christian Hammond of VMware has let the cat out of the bag and announced that VMware Workstation will get unity support in version 6.5. Not all that surprising really, but it's good to know and not have to guess.

Now, how do I get access to the Familiy & Friends beta program?

Weekend Surprise: Microsoft releases Hyper-V beta 1

Out of the blue, Microsoft has released beta 1 of their virtualization hypervisor Hyper-V (formerly known as Viridian). Microsoft seems to have got working on this much quicker than what was anticipated earlier.

It seems the annoucement went live on the 13th, but I didn't see any mention of it until just now. Interesting to see that Quick Migration, as opposed to Live Migration, is still on the table. All in all, the feature set still reads as Microsoft is still playing catch-up with VMware and that there probably won't be any big surprises for the final version scheduled for release 180 days after Server 2008 goes RTM.

For the full details and specific release information, check the Microsoft Press Release and the Hyper-V site.
