Microsoft (silently) releases Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003
All of a sudden, Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 is available for download. Check the Microsoft site for more details regarding what patches are included in SP2. Microsoft has also made a Hotfix Scan Tool available than scans for hotfixes that will potentially regress after the installation. Be sure to run that to make sure everything applies properly. The tool can be run before SP2 deployment as well as after. KB931940 should have more details about the tool (vbscript) but that seems to be unavailable at the time of writing. Happy patching and updating. Update 1: If you run, or plan to run, Windows Server 2003 R2 be sure to upgrade to R2 before applying Service Pack 2. If you don’t, you will not be able to uninstall SP2 after the R2 installation. Update 2: Apparently you need to uninstall IE7 before installing SP2, as SP2 installs IE6. Hey, h0bbel.
I’ve installed SP2 on several x86 Windows 2003 Enterprise server (non-R2), and haven’t noticed any issues with IE being downgraded.
Also, that’s a good tip about R2 vis-a-vis SP2. Is that documented anywhere?

Regarding the IE issue, I haven’t seen it myself as I have no servers with IE7 installed on them. All my SP2 installs has been flawless so far.
Regarding R2, you do get a warning when trying to install R2 after SP2 has been applied. It simply states that you will not be able to uninstall SP2 if you apply R2 on top of it. You could of course uninstall SP2, install R2, and then reapply SP2. This will let you uninstall SP2 if you want to at a later point.
I haven’t seen any “official” documentation about this though.
