Internet Explorer Isolation

GreenBorder Technologies are set to release a security tool that puts Microsoft's IE in a virtual sandbox. Called GreenBorder Pro, the product uses virtualization technology to seal of the boundaries between the OS and the Application. Malicious software is still allowed to execute, but it can't touch the underlying operating system. Now, how is this any different from running the VMware browser appliance, which even gives you a "sandboxed" FireFox? Paying for a product to be able to run Internet Explorer securely when you can get a secure FireFox installation for free doesn't make much sense to me. Of course, added manageability features that GreenBorder offer will probably sweeten the pill a bit for enterprises, but I don't really see how GreenBorder will get much volume out of this.

GreenBorder Pro’s virtual session approach consumes 1/10th the resources of VMs, is easier to use, and protects at a higher level:
    * Automatic - no special app reconfiguration or user training
    * Makes your files & personal info invisible to Internet
    * Saves downloaded files safely - across sessions, even resets
    * Uses your desktop apps/settings/printers transparently
    * Provides easy, safe env for entering identity info online
    * Self cleans — can reset without losing files/apps
    * Eliminates any trace of where you’ve been - even leftover files

It’s not just about protecting the browser; it’s about protecting your data, using apps and downloaded content any effort, etc.

Lots of folks are asking for copies because they’re tired of having to clean up after their friends or family.

Sounds intriguing, and does seem to do more than I initially thought. Is the same technology available for other applications, or is this Internet Explorer only?
In fact, I’ll download it and give it a test run. I’ll report back over the weekend.

Of course antivirus software is still being used. Greenborder doesn’t isolate email applications nor does it provide security outside of Internet Explorer. File shares and P2P applications are still unprotected if you run it.
