ArsTecnica has done a
review of 2004, and guess who won the
Web application of the year award?
Congrats to the
Wordpress team for their excellent work!
And I quote:
Web application of the year
We asked forumgoers to choose the best web application or development framework of the year.
Web-based applications provide interaction for all users regardless of platform or location. If you can connect to the web, you can use it. Forums, blogs, administration tools, collaboration frameworks; there were many excellent options to choose from in 2004.
Winner: WordPress

I'm voting for
Gallery 2 to be the web-app of the year for
2005, anyone care to bet
against me?

I just tried out Gallery 2 locally… it’s nice! It wasn’t as easy to install as WordPress but I guess that’s necessary because of the dependencies and security concerns.
I think what will make or break it is the general availability of quality visual themes, plugin support so people can do things like flickr keywords (is plugin support even planned? must check later) and whether there’s a good win32 client.
