Gallery 2 and Akismet sitting in a tree
A while back made a personal Gallery 2 wishlist, and I am very glad to see that one of the things I felt was missing has now been developed. Gallery 2 now has Akismet support! I have been highly critical of the data gathering Akismet does, but at the same time there really isn't a better alternative available when it comes to the spam comment battle.
Last night the comments module for Gallery 2 was updated with Akismet support, so if you do have an Akismet API key, all you have to do is update the comments module and then enter the API Key in it's configuration. After that, you can process all your existing comments and make sure they are spam free as well as being assured that Akismet is from now on checking your new comments as they arrive on your site.
To enable it, all you have to do, is to go to Site Admin -> Plugins and upgrade your Comments module to 1.1.6. If you have DP (Downloadable Plugins) enabled this shouldn't take many seconds. Then configure your newly updated Comments module with your Akismet API key.
I'm really looking forward to see my spam-free Gallery install!
On a sidenote, WP-Gallery-Remote looks interesting. It's a Wordpress plugin that uses the Gallery Remote protocol to embed your Gallery installation into Wordpress. A novel approach, and while I haven't tested it it does look pretty interesting. Go Christian Bartels!

Thanks for mentioning! You should try out WP-Gallery-Remote. ;-)

Since I’m migrating away from Wordpress to Habari, it’s not likely to be tested on this site. I might very well give it a test run on another site though.
Considered making a Habari plugin instead? :-)

This is great news. I’ve been waiting for this since the first day I installed Gallery2. Though, I’m still waiting now! Comments 1.1.6 doesn’t show up in the upgradeable plugin list. Is it my incompetence, or is it not widely available yet?
Cheers,
Bramz

It’s only available (for now) if you run Gallery 2.3 from SVN (currently in development).

That explains. I’ll have to wait a little longer then.

That’s good news. I launched a new gallery a few weeks ago with a commenting module and it’s filled up with 20 odd spam message. ALl of them contain 50 links. Disabling it was the only solution, but if Akismet is now rocking I’m going to install that. Thanks for the update!

You don’t need to use Akismet. You can use the same plugin but the Typepad Antispam service instead. You use the Akismet plugin but point it to use the Typepad servers instead. (I don’t have the URLs handy. If you download the wp plugin, it’s in there.)
As someone who was blacklisted by Akismet, I don’t think highly of Akismet either. I think rather poorly of Gallery right now making it sound like Akismet is folks’ only choice.

@DrMike: Remember, this post was originally made in August 2007. Lots of things have changed since then, but I do agree to a point. Akismet offers a valuable service for many users, but that still doesn’t make me trust it.
I’ll make a not of testing the TypePad
Antispam service with Gallery 2 and update the documentation if it works. Thanks for the tip!

Actually I didn’t see the date. When I saw the bit about “Gallery2 adding in Akismet” since they had just announced it on their latest version, I assumed it was current.
Sorry for the trouble.

@DrMike: No trouble at all. I wasn’t really aware of the TypePad service so I’ll test it out. I mean, I have heard of it before, but since I’m not really using Akismet anymore I haven’t been paying that much attention.
