Gallery Appliance
The Gallery team is proud to announce the general availability of The Gallery Appliance. We have been toying with the idea of creating this for a couple of months now, and finally Fryfrog has made it happen!
The Gallery Appliance is based on rPath, and has both Gallery 1 and Gallery 2 pre-installed and pre-configured. It even has some images already uploaded, so you can play around with it instantly without any configuration needed at all. Most of all the helper applications that helps power Gallery 1 and Gallery 2 are also installed.
Gallery 1 is currently in version 1.5.4 released the 14th August 2006, and Gallery 2 is version 2.1.2 released on the 17th of August 2006 so this V1.0 release of the appliance ends a busy week for the Gallery team. To keep the appliance updated, we plan to release a new version of the appliance every time there is a Gallery release or issues are found with the appliance itself.
The Gallery Appliance is designed to let users test and run Gallery 1 or Gallery 2 without having to make modifications to their local computers or hosting space. To run the Appliance, you'll need VMware 5.5+ Workstation, VMware Player 1.0+, or VMware Server 1.0.
Download the appliance, unzip it and boot it up using VMware Player. It couldn't be easier!
More details about the Appliance itself, can be found on the documentation site, and screenshots are also available.
Please comment and let us know if you found this useful, and and we would love to hear stories about how this has been utilized.
This appliance is also listed on the vmware site, at http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/521

It can be used in VMware Player, Server, Workstation, and probably ESX (I haven’t tried). It’s downloadable from their website or from VMTN. You can see h0bbel’s blog post for more information on the appliance. I think this is awesome and I hope it works out well for them and for the users. I’d love to see more projects go this route, and with any luck, Gallery will have set a precedent in the web services world. And

2006-09-05 10:55:00[…] Most Open Source development teams are built around volunteers and passionate developers and users, like Gallery. This also means that most projects like this doesn’t have the means to get a custom hardware appliance built nor any interest in doing so. By creating the Official Gallery Appliance we could distribute a pre-configured Gallery Appliance, without having to deal with the hardware. […]

I love it. Very easy way to test Gallery.
We are planning to use it in our process to evaluate a new gallery system.
The problem is to get the Norwegian (Norsk) translation to work, even though the Norwegian translation is set, the text is in English.
I have tried the Swedish (Svenska) translation and that works perfect.

Norwegian locales seems to be a nightmare a lot of the time, because of no_NO, nb_NO, nn_NO and so on. Please join us in #gallery on freenode.net and provide us with any feedback you might have.
Thanks!

Not yet, and believe me, I’ll talk about as soon as it happens. We’re building a new appliance when Gallery 2.2 is released, hopefully rPath will support emulated SCSI disks then.
